Polished + Petite

The owners of this Arts & Craft semi-detached home had a long list of luxury must-haves to be incorporated into their new bathroom.

First and foremost, was a hydrotherapy bath and a smart toilet for a spa-like experience but, equally important, were more functional requirements such as storage, bench space and heated floor and towel rails.

With a small footprint and a long list of requirements, the need for creative, space-saving solutions was paramount for the design of this bathroom. The inclusion of the blade wall became a critical design decision. Not only is it a focal point in the bathroom but it compactly houses the spa pump for the bath as well as hiding the toilet from the entry/hall.

Positioning the toilet on the same wall as the bath freed up the northern wall for the vanity.  Offsetting the basin to the right of the vanity maximised bench, circulation and drawer space while visually balancing the space.

The position of the existing window and the requirement to retain the original architrave made the placement of a shaving cabinet or mirror problematic.  This was overcome by suspending a backlit mirror from the ceiling and angling it toward the basin which, similar to the blade wall, proved to be not only a functional solution but a design feature in its own right.

The finishes throughout were driven from the initial selection of the japanese-style fan tiles, used on the blade wall, in an earthy grey-green palette.  These are complemented by a stone-look porcelain tile used on both the floor and walls and a soft, watery blue on the vanity.  A subtle texture on the exterior of the basin and brushed nickel fixtures throughout complete the look.

There are two things that make a room timeless: a sense of history and a piece of the future.
