the most rewarding interiors require MORE THAN a little bit of adventure

I think our homes should surprise us occasionally.

Not for the sake of being bold, or because every room needs a talking point (although I’m all for both of these!), but because the places we live have a profound influence on how we experience each and every day.

An injection of the unexpected can make you smile every time you walk through the door, encourage you to linger longer around the table, pick up a book, play music or invite friends over. It can give you back the energy that daily routines drain from you. And, it can make you feel more yourself than any place else in the world.

After nearly 20 years designing homes, I’ve become increasingly convinced that the most rewarding interiors aren’t simply beautiful to look at. They make life at home feel more interesting, intuitive and distinctly yours.

Adventurous doesn’t mean impractical

When I talk about adventurous design, I’m not suggesting throwing practicality out the window and hoping for the best. Quite the opposite actually.

Some of the most imaginative design decisions begin with very practical questions: Where does everything actually need to go? How does our family move through this room? What does a typical Saturday, or Tuesday, routine look like? Where do people naturally gather? What do you wish you did more often at home?

Those questions give us the foundation - the information that informs the flow. Then, we can explore how colour, interesting materials and textures, lighting, vintage and new furnishings, custom pieces and unexpected details can turn those practical solutions into something with real personality.

This is where the alchemy of design gets interesting. Function doesn’t need to be mundane, and personality doesn’t need to come at the expense of practicality. It isn’t form following function, but working hand-in hand so the two make each other extraordinary.

Your Home shouldn’t look like anyone else’s

One of the great privileges of my work is designing for people whose lives, interests and personalities are wonderfully different.

That’s why The Space Within doesn’t have one prescribed aesthetic. Our portfolio is diverse and eclectic because our clients are, too.

What runs through the work is something else: playfulness, an adventurous yet always practical approach to materials and colour, thoughtful space planning and unexpected details that bring delight to everyday life.

The goal isn’t to create a home that could belong to anyone. It’s to uncover what will make your home work brilliantly for your life.

Perhaps that means creating spaces that make entertaining easier, somewhere that encourages you to play music more often, a reading spot you genuinely use, or a room that finally gives family life somewhere comfortable to unfold.

That’s where personal design becomes far more interesting than simply choosing a look or defining your style.

Sometimes the transformation doesn’t even require moving walls

There’s a misconception that living better and being more adventurous with your home requires a major renovation.

It doesn’t.

Complete transformation can happen through thoughtful space planning, furnishings, lighting, colour and materials, art, and soft furnishings. These aren’t finishing touches or afterthoughts. They are integral to how a room functions, how you move through it and, importantly, how it makes you feel.

A different furniture layout can change the way people gather. Layered lighting can completely alter the atmosphere of a room throughout the day and night. A vintage piece alongside something contemporary gives a space infinitely more character than buying everything new ever could.

Sometimes the most impactful transformation comes from looking at what you already have with fresh eyes and asking what your home could make possible.

You don’t need to know exactly what you want

This is another lesson experience has taught me: you don’t need to arrive at the design process with a perfectly formed vision.

In fact, I don’t expect you to.

You’re the expert on your life. You know what frustrates you, what you love doing, how your family gathers, where mornings become chaotic, what you’ve collected on your travels and what you wish your home made easier for you.

My role is to listen closely to all of that, find the possibilities you may not have considered and translate them into a home that feels completely personal to you.

That’s also where having an experienced guide matters. A home transformation can be exciting and daunting, filled with knowns and unknowns, much like any worthwhile adventure. You shouldn’t have to become the project manager, project coordinator or design expert along the way.

My job is to know the route, uncover the hidden gems, manage the details and help you enjoy the journey.

A little adventure can make life better, everyday

Ultimately, I don’t believe adventurous design is about how daring a room looks.

It’s about being willing to imagine something better for the way you live.

A home with wisdom baked into every cabinet and corner. Spaces that make everyday routines flow intuitively. Rooms that encourage you to gather, cook, read, create, entertain and spend more time doing the things that return your energy to you and make you feel like yourself again.

And, yes, an unexpected colour palette, an interesting use of material or a whimsical detail all adds to the joy of your home.

Because life is too interesting for our homes to merely accommodate it.

They should inspire more of it.
