RHYTHM & BLUES: A Symphony of Playful Elegance
Introducing the enchanting world of our recent Rhythm & Blues project, where we transformed the home of a young, active family into a haven of modern classicism. The journey began with a solid, single-story house on the Northern Beaches that, despite its prime location, didn't quite dance to the rhythm of family life. The kitchen felt cramped, the flow to the garden was lacking, and the decor needed a breath of fresh air. The owners had worked closely with their building designer to reimagine the layout and coordinate council approvals and we stepped in to infuse the interiors with life and vitality.
Project Concept and Inspiration: A Melody of Modern Classicism
For this dynamic family, the inspiration behind Rhythm & Blues was simple – a desire for a home that supported their family and active lifestyle. The initial layout hurdles were addressed in the renovation plans by reconfiguring spaces to enlarge the kitchen and create a seamless connection between indoors and outdoors. We tweaked these plans a bit more, as you’ll read below, to create an even better flow within the home. Drawing from the timeless charm of the Hamptons and incorporating a few key traditional details, the result is a home that exudes liveable luxury, striking a perfect chord between sophistication and familial warmth.
Design Challenges and Solutions: Harmonising Form and Function
Creating a playful yet functional space can be challenging but, with a few small, considered design alterations, the home now flows easily for everyday living. The main hurdle in this symphony was configuring the entry to feel more inviting while giving purpose to an underutilised space that served as the main thoroughfare from the kitchen to the media room.
By shifting the location of the step into the media room not only did we improve the flow into and around the home, we were effectively able to add another room that will soon house a beautiful customised player-piano, adding a touch of playful elegance to the home’s formal entry.
Incorporating columns to flank the new timber step and adding wainscoting and a chair rail throughout provides architectural refinement. Custom-designed joinery is a functional masterpiece that not only acts as a balustrade and room divider but provides much-needed storage for coats, book bags and the clients’ extensive album collection.
Material and Colour Choices: A Palette of Tranquil Blues and Whimsical Greens
The colour palette for Rhythm & Blues was carefully curated to bring a sense of calm to the entire home. Cool blues, warm greys, chalk whites, and soft greens harmonise effortlessly throughout. Durable, family-friendly materials, including performance upholstery fabrics and washable area rugs, were chosen for their practicality - critical in a home with two young boys! The new engineered oak floor, sandstone cladding on the fireplace, and contemporary art collection add layers of warmth, texture and sophistication.
Personal Touch and Client Collaboration: A Playful Medley of Patterns and Textures
Infusing our signature style into Rhythm & Blues meant orchestrating a playful mix of pattern, texture, and colour. The master bedroom is a testament to this careful balance, where geometric wallpaper coexists with tropical prints and organic abstract patterns play against textured linen and wool. The kitchen, a haven for our clients who are avid cooks and entertainers, features subtle yet visually appealing textures evident in the in v-groove joinery, kit kat tiles, and shaker cabinet panels.

The home is a harmonious balance, providing spaces for quiet conversations and lively play, for snug family movie nights and indoor/outdoor entertaining.
