A Glimpse into Salone del Mobile 2023

Imagine immersing yourself in a world where creativity knows no bounds, where colours, shapes, and textures intertwine to create breathtaking design marvels. Earlier this year, I had the privilege of turning this dream into reality by attending Salone del Mobile, the revered annual interior design fair held in the heart of Milan. The experience was nothing short of enchanting, and I'm thrilled to share the highlights and insights that have left a lasting mark on me.

The city of Milan exuded an infectious energy during the event, an energy that radiated from its iconic architecture, the fashionable locals, to the inspiring supplier stands and installations at the show. My journey through this design wonderland was further enriched by the company of remarkable interior designers from Australia and New Zealand, who were part of a curated group tour hosted by Andrew Mitchell at The Design Coach. Exploring the fair alongside like-minded professionals added a layer of camaraderie and inspiration to the experience, making it all the more memorable.

Over the span of six vibrant spring days, we navigated the bustling streets of Milan, clocking up over 20,000 steps daily! Although months have passed since the event, the vigour, excitement, and creative sparks ignited during Salone del Mobile continue to inspire me like it was yesterday. While I can't replicate the magic of being there in person, I'm excited to share a glimpse of the many standout moments and themes that brought me so much joy.

The Colour Resurgence

Farewell to the era of monotonous greys. Colours are resurging with a triumphant return, both in the realms of fashion and interiors. Prepare to be dazzled by a revival of vibrant and life-affirming hues. The colour palette is warming up, with bold hues adorning furniture, lighting, and accessories. Cobalt blues and rich caramel browns danced in harmony, while the blush pinks evolved into earthier and more complex tones. Yellows, ranging from saffron to gold, and deep burgundies and aubergines made captivating appearances.

Texture's Allure

Furniture embraced a newfound luster, with highly polished surfaces crafted from natural stone and porcelain, alongside beautifully lacquered finishes in jewel tones. Woven fabrics introduced intricate textures and subtle patterns to small upholstered pieces and lighting fixtures. Glass furniture emerged with ribbed, etched, dimpled, and metal-infused designs, adding an enchanting tactile dimension.

Embracing Heritage

Many exhibitors celebrated the magic of looking back to pave the way forward, championing sustainability, reinvention, and artisanal craftsmanship. This ethos was particularly evident in lighting displays. Lladro, renowned for its cherished figurines, presented a dynamic lighting collection that ingeniously fused heritage with innovation. Precioso wowed audiences with a lighting system borne from their revitalisation of artisan crystal factories in the Czech Republic.

Details That Dazzle

Upholstered furniture underwent a transformation, adorned with intricate details such as piping, flanges, and creative topstitching. Integrated lighting seamlessly enhanced wardrobes, shelves, and cabinets, adding both ambiance and emphasis to accent pieces.

Shapes That Enchant

Organic forms took centre stage at the fair. Round and curved dining tables inviting relaxed dining, and boomerang-shaped console tables snugly fit behind curved sofas and nestled into corners, while uniquely shaped coffee tables crafted captivating living room landscapes.

A Playful Spirit

The whimsical side of design flourished at this year's event. From unexpected splashes of colour to anthropomorphic furniture shapes, a noticeable touch of playfulness ran through the design storyline, evoking a cheerful and lighthearted atmosphere.

While these snapshots only scratch the surface of the Milan experience, they capture the essence of the joy and inspiration that permeated the event. Looking ahead, the anticipation for Salone del Mobile 2024 is already building within me, a sentiment I never would have expected just six months ago.
